If you are reading this to gain more insight into Open Source CMS Software and how it works, why you want it, and what it can be used for, you should read part one of the intro to Open Source CMS Software here: [Open Source CMS Software Part 1] In that article I covered the basics of how community websites work and also discussed exactly what the words Open source-Software-CMS mean! What PHP is, MySQL databases and the different types of users and privileges that come together to make an entire community or interactive website like MySpace.
Now, I'm going to specifically discuss where Open Source CMS Software comes in. Programs like Joomla, Mambo, Drupal, Xoops, etc. These
open source software programs are not like the software you
conventionally think of when you hear the word "software." You might
think about, Adobe Photoshop or Norton Anti-virus and how you have to
put the CD in your hard drive and download it. What's the difference between software for your hard drive and software for the web? That's very simple, or very complicated. We're going to understand the very simple meaning...Basically, open source software for the web interacts with the web and not your hard drive. Your hard drive comes with an operating system...Think PC, MAC, Windows more specifically. In order for software to work with YOUR operating system, it has to understand the language of YOUR operating system. That's why there are always separate software suites for MACS and PCS...They're different! Just as the web is a different animal all together. What's amazing about the web and the type of software that interacts with it, is it's easily controlled by the user. Well, I'm sure there are some programmers out there who would beg to differ the meaning of "easy" and claim operating systems like PCS and MACS are pretty easy to work with too. The Open Source Software Suites: Download, Install, Execute
Any
open source software program is downloaded, installed and up and
running on your website. This process basically consists of downloading
the many files that comprise the software program, putting the files on
your website's server through an FTP client, and following the
instructions (manual) that comes with the software program to get it up
and running. If you want find out how you can get your software automatically installed for you free and have it up and running in minutes. Read: Automatically Installed: Joomla, Drupal, WordPress and More! So, Why is CMS Open Source Software So Great?Because the users, the interface, the admin privileges I was talking about in my previous article, and what makes MySpace so great, is already set up for you! Programmed and ready for any NON-PROGRAMMER to run! Just as you had to figure out the way MySpace works, and learn to create your page, add comments, request friends, you can just as easily learn to create interactive websites (Like MySpace, Digg.com, YouTube) as an administrator! So, Why Doesn't Everyone Just Do it!Lots of people are doing it. You would be surprised how many websites have utilized pre-programmed open source cms software suites. They are simple for anyone, non-programmers, non-web designers, to create very dynamic and interactive sites. But, everyone doesn't do it because it takes time, patience and the will to finish a project from start to finish. Also, if you learn the ways around the software suite, the way I've made my way through Joomla, you can completely customize everything about your website, making it better, prettier and unique!Good Luck
